Rain, rain and more rain

There was quite some deluge last night, with hours of heavy rain, as if the last couple of days of rain wasn’t enough. Fortunately, our house is on a hill and all rainwater runs off our section, but I know others on the flat won’t have been so lucky. I did hear the figure of 130 mls being bandied about. We have usual places that flood up at such times; our road out to State Highway 35 is one, but with a bypass in place there are not many times when we get completely cut off. I am not sure what the situation is this morning, but fortunately, I don’t have to go anywhere. Yesterday was the same. It is nice sometimes being able to stay warm and cosy in the house when the rain is pelting down outside. Last week, when we visited Michael, it was also wet and I remembered thinking then how nice it would have been to have just stayed home instead. The forecast indicates a break this afternoon but there seems more rain is indicated for later in the week.

I bought some fertiliser when in town on Monday. Once I finish weeding all the garden, I will place some around the plants, followed by mulch, although I haven’t worked out what type yet. It is always good to have rain after application, but not too much of it. I don’t want that all being washed away. I have been a bit slack with my fertiliser. It is sandy soil here and the garden needs heaps of it and yet over the last year or two I haven’t applied it as regularly as I did in the past. I am not sure whether I have bought the right one this time either, as this one is just super and nitrogen without the potassium that I know the hibiscuses like. That was all they had in the shop that I bought it from.

I am pleased for the garden though that the plants are getting this rain, enough to really soak them through. Summers are always tough up here for anything trying to grow.

I noticed yesterday that our driveway had been gouged out and I expect that to be a whole lot worse after last night’s rain. Time for the digger and more metal, I think.

But, whilst it keeps raining, I have more indoor jobs that need attending to, the main one being my tax return which is due shortly. This morning would be the perfect morning to complete that job.

On that note, time to keep the tax man happy.
