Morning tea

This morning the local hall committee has organised a morning tea for all the new people in the community and of course for the ones who have been here for a while.

I am living in an area where there has been huge development of late, mainly because it is one of the few areas around with vacant sections. All those in the more popular places have either sold or become unaffordable. Thus, the development has brought more people to our area. This is also a holiday destination so some of these new-builds are for holiday homes but also, there are permanent residents making this peninsula their home.

More people can only be a good thing, for with the extra people come tradespeople starting up their businesses, shops deciding it is viable to open here and so forth, though currently there have been no new shops although I think this will happen. A few years ago, the resort that is nearby had plans to open a massive shopping complex along with developing a further number of units for visiting Chinese, though this has not happened and may not. That would be a private development, though I am sure if it was to go ahead, locals would have access to the facilities. Currently, the golf course is available for locals to use and there is a restaurant and winery where we can dine and listen to music. We are very lucky.

When I was massaging, I used to do massages at the resort and had my own business at home. I met a lot of people this way. Now that I am not doing this, I find I have lost touch with many locals and have not met many of the new ones. Today will be a good opportunity to say hello again. Being unwell for so many years didn’t help either as I had no energy to do anything. Even now I am finding I have to pace myself but I figure a morning tea is doable. There is also a batons-up event organised as a fundraiser for Friday night. In these occasions people buy tickets and could win one of the many batons (prizes) available. When I lived in a small community years ago, we had these and each person was responsible for bringing a baton which could be anything. Some baked cakes, others brought linen or kitchen things, others meat or alcohol. If a person’s number was drawn, they could then choose something off the table. I am not sure how this one will be organised – perhaps prizes will be pre-determined. But whatever, they are always fun nights and great fundraisers. We have all been asked to donate pantry items for this and I know the resort has also donated something substantial, a night or weekend accommodation, I think.

It is nearly 9.30 and time to go so best be off
