Keto again

This will be my third attempt at the keto diet, something I hadn’t wanted to do because of the restrictions it entails. On my first go, I followed the regime strictly and lost 17 kg. It was a trip away for a funeral, where finding keto foods was difficult, that I decided to forget about the diet for the time being and resume when I got home. Then I got Covid and all eating restrictions went out the window. I had followed that diet for all of 2021 and till March of 2022.

I had another attempt some months later, lost a few kilos and it was after another illness that I resumed my unhealthy eating. I had not wanted to do keto again, rather eat smaller portions and cut out the sugars and breads. However, the reality for me seems to be that I am unable to do this. When I am eating carbs, I just want more of them. And now I have found myself right back up there at my heaviest weight ever.

I started again on the keto diet a week ago. I have found that when I cut the carbs out it is far easier to realise when I am full and to stop eating.  It went well for those first few days but was abruptly halted when the temptation of a caramel slice got the better of me. That in itself would have been okay, but I continued eating the carb-laden food the following day. So yesterday, I once again vowed to resume the diet. However, this time, I went online and ordered some extras that will hopefully help me stick to this eating plan.

I had perused the Keto Store in the past and yesterday I bought some of the keto alternatives to the staples I am used to. I was impressed with their efficiency and was emailed that my delivery was already on its way, an hour later. I had found a keto bread that I actually liked at the supermarket once so I found their website and ordered some of the loaves. The reason I didn’t buy these from the supermarket is because I have only seen them there once and I wanted to be certain I would have a supply when I needed it, especially as we don’t grocery shop very often.

The big thing with this diet is remembering that there are always alternatives, especially when a craving takes hold. There are ways of making a keto version of the caramel slice, for example.

I have decided that I am going to do keto this time without cutting out fruit or vegetables – vegetables below the ground, such as carrots and onions, are generally high in carbs. I have been having half an orange a day. I think, by allowing myself the fruit and unlimited access to all vegetables, that it will be easier to sustain and after all sustainability is one of the key factors to losing weight and keeping it off. Hopefully, this time, I will be successful.
